The Ten Commandments: A Deeper Dive Commandment 7 Adultery

Good day to each of you reading this column on the Ten Commandments and the addressing of adultery.

Children, so funny and so innocent, so let’s laugh and enjoy this day.

God has always been in control and knows our every thought, so why do we think we can get away with something knowing that God knows all.

I take adultery as a subject, for all too many times man thinks that the grass is greener on the other side and is always looking at the next big thing instead of putting in the work of a marriage.

Man, all too many times thinks he will be forever young and his looks or the looks of his wife will fade and one or the other will move on to greener pastures or so they think. 

God talks about beauty in the Old Testament as Proverbs 31:30 (NIV) says Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

As for man, turn to 1 Samuel 16:7, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”

God created both man and woman to become one flesh – Look at Genesis 2:24 (NIV) 

²⁴ That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

The importance of this verse was also found in Matthew 19:5 and Mark 10:8 for God provided a triple witness to the importance of marriage for God hates divorce.

Look no further than Malachi 2:16 (NIV) ¹⁶ “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” ^[a] says the Lord Almighty.

So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.

Folks, this is what the Bible says for this has been going on since the time of Moses and when he experienced this with the Israelites.

As a nation, we see marriage as an experiment to see if we are compatible for the long term—unfortunately, we live in a society of trading in the old for a newer model.

We, as a society, marvel about those who have been married 30, 40, or 50 years and have asked the secret to their marriage. As for the kicker, when we look at history and compare America to Rome in when it was a ruling power, we see all too many similarities which include the destruction of the family and the departure of Biblical laws which include decency and morality.

Unfortunately, we no longer are shocked when we hear about adultery or murder of a spouse. The judgments found in the Old Testament are not outdated, rather God’s outline for his people to follow so they would be blessed and not cursed.

Again, the Ten Commandments are not suggestions, but direct commands from God for each us to follow and obey. If one of them is broken, then consequences will intervene.

You might say that you have experienced adultery with the other spouse and that God has not intervened, but wait for the day is coming and each and everyone will face Jesus personally to give an account of his life. The answer is simple; all will give an account of their life.

The Israelites were instructed to follow each of the Commandments which included the following from Leviticus 20:10 (NIV) ¹⁰ “‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.

This was written to protect womanhood, motherhood, and for the rights of one neighbor. 

Look at Matthew 5:32 where Jesus says, ³² But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Simply put, adultery is the one and only ground under the law that Jesus said was justification for divorce. Death was the penalty for adultery. The conclusion is that under the law, the person who commits adultery is legally dead and whether actual death follows or not divorce was justifiable.

Hebrews 13:4 (KJV) says ⁴ Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

I think we have established who an adulterer is as well as the whoremonger and the ending is simple, but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Proverbs puts all things into perspective for 6:32 (KJV) says ³² But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

All too many times adultery has broken up many a home for God is very serious about marriage, children and the home. Of course, Satan loves to destroy the home and make both man and woman eyes wander and then lust for the other party.

The degradation of the family is the objective of Satan and the destruction of our society. We see it in the news, on the internet, hear it on the radio and all the while may experience in our family.

The effects are wide reaching especially when children are involved and the only person that may benefit is the attorney.

So the question is, do you wish to destroy your own soul for a few minutes of pleasure and knowing that God, who sees all, will meet you one day? Is it worth it? 

Now it’s time to move on to the eighth commandment.
