Who shall rule over us, America? (Part 1)
Good day to each of you reading this topic on the up-and-coming elections and the course of history.
Before we begin, let’s turn to some humor from South County Churches:
Church Bulletin Bloopers
The Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles, and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.
The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday morning.
Remember in prayer the many who are sick in our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “Hell” to someone who doesn’t care much about you.
At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What Is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice.
This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.
Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use the large double door at the side entrance.
The associate minister unveiled the church’s new tithing campaign slogan last Sunday: “I Upped My Pledge—Up Yours.”
Wow, great stuff from the church bloopers bulletin!
I just got done reading a very good article from Lindsay Mills, those that govern us from Thy Kingdom Come digest dated October 2026.
2026 has turned out to be a downfall for our President. I say this because we (America) are engaged in a no-win war draining money resources and military personnel. You might say that we don’t want Iran to get nuclear weapons and possibly use those against our nation. If you are a Christian, are you not aware that God will not permit mankind to be totally wiped off the planet? Did he not make that promise when He flooded the earth and said he would not destroy everyone again?
The article, by Mr. Mills brings forth the points of politicians past and present who are conceited and self-centered. One looks no further than our President who acts and says things that he can’t back up and has no humility in his words nor his actions.
Thank God our forefathers were not those types of men who placed their emphasis on what they did and gave zero credit to God.
Please read the following: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” – Romans 13:1
Yes, we as Christians are subject to the governing authorities—authorities that we chose, both you and I. Make no mistake that God already knew who was going to be elected before the appointed time for he is the absolute authority. So, why vote if the outcome is known? Here is where the Bible gives us insight on the type of leaders we need to put into office.
Before I answer that Biblically, I want to take you to Daniel and use an example as to what happens when a leader becomes so conceited and self-centered.
Turn to Daniel 2:21 (NIV) He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
Daniel 2 begins with Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and the awaiting of who can interpret the dream. Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of the world at that time, called upon his own group of astrologers to interpret the dream and the outcome was death—The astrologers told the king that no one could reveal to the king except the gods, and they don’t live among humans.
The king, in turn ordered the execution of all the wise men including Daniel and his friends.
Daniel did two interesting things in the next few verses:
He spoke with tact to Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard and asked him, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Immediately, Daniel went to the king and asked him for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
Permission granted, so where did Daniel go? As you read the next few verses, here is where Daniel asks God for wisdom and discernment—Daniel 2:17-20 (NIV) 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven 20 and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
PRAYER—Daniel pleaded for mercy for not just himself but that the four of them would not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. The result—the mystery was revealed to Daniel and Daniel gave all the glory to God. This is shown in verse 23 where Daniel thanks and praises God—You have shown me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you (including the three friends) and you made to us the dream of the king.
Now you see, Daniel could have left out the wise men of Babylon who were to be executed but instead asked Arioch not to execute the wise men for Daniel was going before the king to interpret his dream for him.
Please notice that Daniel was least and not greatest for Daniel used tact and spoke wisdom to both Arioch and the king. Daniel was not self-centered, arrogant or mean-spirited and glorified God first and foremost.
The result is shown in verses 47-49 (NIV) 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.”
48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.
The eyes of the king were opened for Nebuchadnezzar said “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
It seems that Nebuchadnezzar was humbled by God for he says that is the God and gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries.
Here is a king who ruled the world and found out, not from his wise men, but from Daniel that there was a God over all other gods and Lord over kings including himself.
But as the king’s reign continued, so came the emergence of the astrologers and the image of the king made in gold.
Nebuchadnezzar, made an image of gold, so that all would bow down and worship him.
I stop here to look at those who have been placed in office and here are the following observations.
Man has never learned his lesson in being humble and least. The Bible and Jesus as the center sites many examples of being least and humble. Whether you have a position of great honor or you are placed above others, have you learned to be humble, respectful or haughty?
Those in the political sphere spew mean spirited comments on their opposition to make them look as the better choice. Our society accepts and promotes those who would rather take the “low road than high road” and finds that degrading the other person gets them “more brownie points”.
The word “humble” is used 25 times in the Bible—Look at what Jesus said in Matthew 23:12 (NIV) 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
I think the word “praise” could be inserted for exalted and this is what I see in our society where we have all so many leaders looking for praise and glory of what they did. Their accomplishments mean so much more to them personally and the more they think they do, the more praise they expect.
Instead of tell the world what you have done, the words are flipped by saying to any and all who listen that I will tell the world of what I may or will do and the end, look at the results.
America, we have entered and are now in the period known as the Laodicean period. Here is what Jesus said in Revelation 3:14-16 (NIV) 14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
America, our leaders and all so many pastors answer questions and give their thoughts to controversial topics that neither are cold nor hot. It was better to sit on the fence then to offend anyone whether it be a minority or sect.
It is so sad to see that we have a divided congress, senate and country, but why? Look no further than pride and the person who wants to get their way—yes, their way!
If our forefathers, when working on the constitution, would have acted the way our leaders act today, then nothing would have been done and we would be under British rule today.
You may agree or disagree, but this country America was based upon and founded under the commandments, statutes, judgments and laws in the Bible and under the authority of God.
As Lindsay Mills says in his article, here is what Ben Franklin said in the course of drafting our constitution. Online Speech Bank: Benjamin Franklin’s Prayer Speech at the Constitutional Convention of 1787
Mr. President:
The small progress we have made after 4 or five weeks close attendance & continual reasonings with each other — our different sentiments on almost every question, several of the last producing as many noes as ays, is methinks a melancholy proof of the imperfection of the Human Understanding. We indeed seem to feel our own want of political wisdom, since we have been running about in search of it. We have gone back to ancient history for models of government, and examined the different forms of those Republics which having been formed with the seeds of their own dissolution now no longer exist. And we have viewed Modern States all round Europe, but find none of their Constitutions suitable to our circumstances.
In this situation of this Assembly groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the contest with G. Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine Protection. — Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a Superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance.
I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without [H]is notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without [H]is aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that “except the Lord build the House they labor in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without [H]is concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall be become a reproach and a bye word down to future age. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human Wisdom, and leave it to chance, war, and conquest.
I therefore beg leave to move — that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that service.
As you read Benjamin Franklin’s prayer speech in 1787, I hope you see his humbleness to the Almighty God and the ramifications that would happen when we turn from God and establish governments by human wisdom or by war and conquest.
As we look to the future, we have one hope and only one hope and that Jesus comes ever so quickly to save us.
IN the meantime, I believe God has given us the solution for a better America and that is found in II Chronicles 7:14 (NIV) 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
So, why vote if the outcome is known? Did you know that the Bible gives us insight on the type of leaders we need to put into office?
Let’s answer those questions in the next segment.
